My graduate thesis focused on mineralogy and geochemistry of gas producing black shales, namely the Utica/Point Pleasant, Lexington, and Trenton formations in southeastern Ohio. As part of my research, I developed a new model that can be used to determine paleoredox states using sulfide morphology.Read my thesis
During my time at the Ohio Geological Survey, I participated in a project to map the Missippian-Pennsylvanian unconformity in Ohio. This gap in the rock record is a critical point used by drillers when making water and hydrocarbon wells.
During graduate school, I noticed that the current methods for measuring gravitational acceleration were outdated. Geologists measure variances in the gravitational acceleration on Earth to learn about the subsurface. The current method is to use a very delicate device called a gravimeter. The gravimeter is comprised of a dial, a quartz spring (that costs over fifty grand), and a lever. The sping and lever react to small changes in gravity, allowing for measurement of the gravitational acceleration. I developed a far more accurate method that measures the eigenstates of neutrons in a linear potential.Download my paper
I have been bartending since 2018 and frequently create cocktails. I primarily enjoy whiskey and gin, but have started playing with mezcal, dark rums, and amaro. Click below to check out some of my recipes. My drink recipes
My undergraduate degrees are in geology and political science, with the focus of my political science being in international relations (often called "IR"). There are many aspects of political science that I find fascinating, from theory to law, but one phenomena caught my attention: state failure. State failure denotes a complete or partial erosion of state authority, leaving behind a security vacuum. Common examples include Somalia, Sudan, Chad, and Côte d'Ivoire. My work concluded that state failure occurs when the state unequally applies political goods (e.g. infrastructure, benefits, security, etc.) creating a marginalized group, typically along religious, ethnic, or regional lines. This out group begins to not recognize the authority of the state, sometimes resulting in civil war, and often creating their own governing bodies to better represent their interests.Read my thesis
